The Long Way Round

Field + Theory began, as many worthwhile things do, not with a rush, but with a slightly panicked and unavoidable pause.

The pause gave us time to consider what we were missing, not just in beer, but in the way we spend our time, who we spend it with, and what we choose to gather around.

We wanted to build something quieter. Something rooted. Something that made space for people, conversation, and togetherness; whether that’s around a table, at the bar, or outside with the weather doing what it does.

Slowing The Pace

Field + Theory is shaped by the idea of slow living. Not as a trend, but as a necessity.

We believe good beer should fit naturally into moments that matter: an unhurried afternoon, a long conversation, the simple act of being outside and present. Our beers are designed to sit comfortably in those moments,  balanced, dependable, and rewarding without demanding attention.

They’re not about chasing extremes. They’re about returning to what lasts.

Where it Began

For me, brewing started early. My dad told me i had my first job at the Pot Kiln in Yattendon back in 1998, a favourite haunt of his where hospitality, food and beer were (and are) treated with real care. Just behind it sat a family brewery, and it didn’t take long before curiosity turned into work, and work into a vocation.

Over the next two decades, I was fortunate to experience brewing from the ground up: from traditional, small-scale settings to planning and installing a large contract brewing and packaging facility close by. Along the way, I learned what it takes to make beer well, not just technically, but thoughtfully. How decisions compound. How small details matter. How restraint often leads to better results.

That grounding, in process, patience and perspective, is baked into Field + Theory.

Hospitality at the Heart

Both of us come from decades of hospitality experience. Between us, we’ve spent countless hours in pubs, breweries and taprooms across the UK and Europe, not as tourists, but as observers. Watching how people gather. What makes a place feel generous. Why some beers invite another round, and others quietly don’t.

That experience matters. It shapes how we brew, how we talk, and how we show up for the people we work with. We understand the pressures of the on-trade. We understand the importance of reliability. And we understand that the best relationships are built by listening first.

What we Stand For

Field + Theory is built on a few simple principles:

  • Quality, without noise
We aim for quiet excellence, beers that reveal themselves over time, not all at once.

  • Heritage, thoughtfully applied
Respect for traditional styles and ingredients, interpreted with a modern, measured hand.

  • People before products
Beer is the medium, not the message. Conversation, connection and togetherness are the point.

  • Place and season
We’re inspired by the outdoors, by time spent away from screens, by the grounding effect of nature and repetition.

Why Support Field + Theory

If you choose to support Field + Theory, you’re not just buying beer.

You’re backing a business that values care over scale, listening over shouting, and longevity over hype. You’re supporting beers made to be returned to,  beers that belong in everyday life, not just special occasions.

Whether you’re a drinker, a pub, or someone simply curious, our aim is the same: to offer something dependable, thoughtful, and quietly well made.

Looking Ahead

Field + Theory is still taking shape. There's more to say about where we are, how we brew, and what comes next. But we’re comfortable letting that unfold at its own pace.

For now, we’re glad you’re here.
